Barbara Stewart - Lung Cancer

Barbara Stewart - Lung Cancer

A lady from Scotland, Mrs Barbara Stewart, underwent all available conventional treatments for lung cancer. They were unsuccessful and she was given a few weeks to live. She came to see Professor Moghissi, in Yorkshire and he treated her with PDT which gave her six years of good quality life. Her family were so pleased with the PDT treatment that they set up the Barbara Stewart Cancer Trust and gave over £1 million of their own personal funds to establish the Scottish PDT Centre at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Patients have been treated from Scotland, England and all over the world at the PDT Centre.

HRH Princess Alexandra opened the unit in 2001.

The Centre has undertaken over 2,000 PDT treatments in skin cancers as well as giving other PDT treatments.

An exciting development at Ninewells is the use of PDT for treatment of certain types of brain tumours. The early results of this research are encouraging.

The Centre has established an international reputation for the clinical PDT treatments and the innovative research work carried out in conjunction with the University of Dundee and St Andrews, under the direction of Carol Goodman, Research Nurse Co-ordinator, Professor Harry Moseley (Scientific Director), and Professor Sam Eljamel (Clinical Director). All of this has been possible through the generosity of Alf and Barbara Stewart.
